Background:

When applying for a management position potential employers are not only looking for the skills and qualifications you have but also relevance of where you have worked in the past in relation to the position you want.

Generally a manager is in charge of people so they like to get an idea of your personality so that they can ascertain whether you will fit their company culture. It is always a good idea to research the different companies within the industries you would ideally like to work for to gain an understanding of what they look for as a business. Company websites are a great way to find out what matters most to an organisation, that way you can tailor your presentation to suit.

Questions:

  • What is your name?
  • What type of management position are you looking for i.e. call centre, recruitment, operational?
  • What industries have you worked in and how many people did you manage?
  • Why would you be the best person to fill that role?
  • What skills, qualifications, and experiences could you offer that would make you perfect for that role?
  •  What are some of your highest achievements in the past which relate to the role you are after?
  • In summary, how would all of your skills, qualifications, experiences and personality traits lead you to be perfect for this role?
  • If your ideal company hired you, what could they expect from you by way of performance?
  • Do you belong to any networks, memberships or other organisations which will add value to your potential employer? For example, if you are a business development manager, you may want to include mention of how many clients you currently have on your books.

Sample Script:

Hi my name is Julie Andrews; I am currently working as a manager for the Monte Cristo Resort Restaurant in the Bay Area, Melbourne. I have 10 years in the hospitality industry.  In my current role I am responsible for the smooth operations of restaurant, equipment and lounge areas.  I have a solid history of producing results within a limited budget. I have built and successfully managed a staff of 20.  In my various roles I have been responsible for executing budgetary responsibilities that include target worker-hours, forecasts, labour forecasting, cost control, profit and loss accountability, just in-time purchasing and inventories. I deal effectively with customers, executives and stockholders on a regular basis. All of these achievements are critical to a company such as yours that must compete in today's difficult economy.   When I am not at work I like to volunteer at the RSPCA and I recently completed the Annual Melbourne Breast Cancer marathon.  I have attached a detailed resume and hope to hear from you soon.
